Technical and regulatory aspects of the 2020 global fuel sulphur limit are major concerns to the industry ahead of 1 January 2020. The course focuses on all aspects including bunker clauses.
What will you learn?
Some of the topics the course will cover are:
- How will a ban on carriage of non-compliant fuel work in practice?
- Overview of the BIMCO suite of fuel clauses and how they can be used going forward
- Working with the 2020 Fuel Transition Clause for Time Charter Parties
- Working with the Marine Fuel Sulphur Content Clause for Charter Parties
- Workshop on installation of scrubbers and the possible contractual issues leading to disputes
- Overview of the possible effects of MARPOL VI regulations 14 and 18
- Supply and demand for fuels after 1 January 2020
If owners have fitted the scrubber and shared the costs with time charterers, should charterers have any liability if the scrubber breaks down? Does MARPOL Annex VI permit the ship to continue trading if the scrubber breaks down?
Installation of scrubbers may cause a range of unforeseen contractual consequences, the results of which can be difficult to predict both for owners and charterers. What issues can arise? In a short workshop, all participants will work in groups to answer one question per group. The result of all the workshops we conduct worldwide will be shared between all the participants.
Why choose to participate?
You will be taught by hand-picked industry experts who have built a career out of understanding how the global bunker industry works. The combination of presentations, discussions and casework will make the complexity of switching over fuels clearer, even though there are still many unknowns. The teachers will share valuable experiences and point participants towards practical solutions, which can be used on the job. The course will also facilitate networking between international shipping peers.
The course is aimed at all practitioners involved in maritime transportation, who wish to boost their knowledge and become proficient in understanding the complexities of the 2020 sulphur cap and the MARPOL Annex VI requirements.
How will this course help your professional development?
Fuel management is a hugely important aspect of operating and trading ships across the segments of the maritime industry. This course will help you identify the potential challenges and enable you to ask the right questions to the parties involved, thereby helping you to understand and explain your own risks and exposure. After the course, you will have a have a better understanding of the need to incorporate suitable clauses, such as the BIMCO 2020 Fuel Transition Clause for Time Charter Parties and the 2020 Marine Fuel Sulphur Content Clause for Time Charter Parties. These clauses provide a commercial approach to apportionment of liability for some of the key issues arising out of the change in regulation.
BIMCO issues electronic course files as an Adobe PDF file enabling you to make personal notes using a computer or tablet. Please bring a computer or tablet! All documentation and presentations will be in English.
