The seminar focuses on the practical aspects of trading vessels and cargoes in areas where sea ice can impact the commercial agreement. The seminar is structured as a blend of useful commercial guidance and case discussions.
Some of the topics you will cover.
A ship had been fixed on a NYPE for 4-6 months, for worldwide trading, including the Saint Lawrence River and East Coast Canada. The ship entered the port of Gros Cacouna assisted by an icebreaker but berthed with difficulty due to ice. Within the port the ice thickness averaged between 20 and 25 cm. After discharging the vessel departed with difficulty. Afterwards, the vessel performed normally until the pilot disembarked and the master attempted to increase sea speed. The engine was unable to reach normal speed. Propeller damaged was suspected, and the vessel was diverted for repairs. Charterers placed the vessel off-hire for the duration of the deviation and repairs.
Is the off hire justified? Was Gros Cacouna a “safe port”? These are some of the questions participants will face in the case study.
In the case studies, you will work in small groups to consider the scenario and a range of problems that arise. The cases will be a focus for dialogue and will help the participants understand issues around sea ice.
You will be taught by hand-picked industry experts who have built a career out of advising BIMCO members on the commercial aspects of arctic navigation. The combination of theory, discussion and casework will make the complexity of winter trading and chartering issues clear and manageable. The teachers will share valuable experiences and point participants towards practical solutions, which can be used on the job. The course will also facilitate networking between international shipping peers and enable networking between the participants.
Ice navigation and chartering requires both experience and information. Understanding risks and exposure and the tools to minimize the risks, such as insurance, is important when trading in icy waters. Furthermore, interpretation of international conventions can cause discussions or disputes between owners and charterers.
The ice navigation and chartering course will assist you in identifying the potential challenges in advance and enable you to ask the right questions to the parties involved, thereby helping you to understand and explain your own risks and exposure.
After the course, you will have a have a much deeper understanding of the fundamental challenges trading in ice covered waters. You will be able to discuss issues such as ice codes, the value of different ice clauses and contingency plans with your superiors, crew, insurers or technical department.
