On 13 October 2017, a bulk carrier with 26 seafarers and carrying nickel ore from Indonesia to China sank off the Philippines. Ten crew members are still missing. Though the cause of the incident has yet to be established, BIMCO would like to take this opportunity to remind its members of the liquefaction danger associated with the loading of nickel ore, especially from countries like Philippines and Indonesia.
BIMCO has, in the past, informed members (see below news articles) about the risks involved with the carriage of nickel ore. BIMCO would once again urge members to contact their P&I club for professional guidance, should they wish to fix nickel ore shipments, in particular coming from these two countries.
