Support for eradicating piracy in the Gulf of Guinea is gaining strength both in Asia and world-wide. Organisations including Japan’s NYK Line and the Asian Shipowners’ Association are among the latest to join in the call for action.

BIMCO submits proposal to IMO to extend BWM experience-building phase

BIMCO has submitted a proposal to the upcoming Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 77 with the aim to extend the experience-building phase (EBP) associated with the International convention for the control and management of Ships’ ballast water and sediments, 2004 (BWM Convention). The extension is deemed necessary due to slow progress of the data collection phase.

BIMCO expands its Asian presence

Deputy Secretary General, Søren Larsen, is expected to relocate to Singapore in the first quarter of 2022 to facilitate BIMCO’s ambition to strengthen support to members and the wider maritime community in the region.

BIMCO calls on shipowners to provide information on biofouling management

BIMCO is launching a new survey with the aim of gathering information from shipowners about the effectiveness of their anti-fouling systems (AFS). The information gathered will help BIMCO provide factual information to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) about biofouling management in practice.

A continued downward trend in Somali piracy has prompted leading shipping organisations to reduce the geographic boundaries of the ‘High Risk Area’ (HRA) for piracy in the Indian Ocean, which will apply from 1 September 2021.

New BIMCO/ICS Seafarer Workforce Report warns of serious potential officer shortage

Launched today, the new Seafarer Workforce Report from BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping warns that the industry must significantly increase training and recruitment levels if it is to avoid a serious shortage in the total supply of officers by 2026. Given the growing demand for STCW certified officers, the Report predicts that there will be a need for an additional 89,510 officers by 2026 to operate the world merchant fleet. The report estimates that 1.89 million seafarers currently serve the world merchant fleet, operating over 74,000 vessels around the globe.
