Pilotage in and around the Bay region is compulsory for all foreign registered vessels and available 24 hours.
Pilotage over the Golden Gate Bar and primarily in and around the Bay is provided by the San Francisco Bar Pilots Association. Additionally, the same pilots are commissioned by the individual port authorities.
Pilots board near the San Francisco Approach Buoy "SF" (37°45.0'N 112°41.5'W) or in bad weather, to seaward. Two pilot boats, "San Francisco" and "California" monitor VHF Ch 16, 10 and 13.
Vessels should send their ETA via agent 48 hours to arrival and revised 12 and 4 hours prior to arrival. Tankers to be escorted are boarded approx 1nm W of "SF" Lightbuoy.
