Harbour

Saldanha Bay is a large safe harbour. The seaward port limits are shown on the charts by lines drawn from Long Point in a SW direction for 3 miles, thence SE for 10 miles and NE for some 3 miles to the shore E of Vondeling Island. The harbour entry line is a straight line between the lighthouses on North and South Heads.   The Main Jetty Projects SSW for some 2.5 miles from the N shore of the bay. It consists of a stockpiling area, a 2 km long causeway and a 1 km long jetty of the caisson type with a deck construction spanned between the caissons. It is fitted with adequate quick release hooks and substantial fenders of 3.3 m diameter. The seaward side of the southernmost caisson (No. 25) is fitted with a fog-horn, range 3 miles, and a 9.0 m long vertical sodium vapour light, fixed yellow, unobscured and visible 13 miles. The centre of the light is 12.0 m above CD. The mooring dolphins 22-25 are provided with floodlights. Multi-Purpose Terminal 201, 202, 203 AND 204 Total length is 874.0 m for all three (3) terminals.
