The sixth meeting of IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 6) has concluded that further studies of the impact from discharge of washwater from open loop scrubbers are needed and has invited member states and international organisations to submit further information.
BIMCO’s committee structure will change to reflect the increased importance of the environment while maintaining a thorough debate on safety. The BIMCO Board of Directors agreed to the change at a meeting in December.

Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE) is the sub-committee at the IMO which discusses matters relating to life saving, fire safety and the safety of other systems on board ships in detail. The SSE, which works under the auspices of the parent Marine Safety Committee (MSC), meets once every year.
The 10th meeting of the IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention & Response has completed its review of THE 2011 GUIDELINES FOR THE CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT OF SHIPS' BIOFOULING TO MINIMIZE THE TRANSFER OF INVASIVE AQUATIC SPECIES with new guidance to ships on how to best manage biofouling including through performance monitoring, inspection frequencies and in-water cleaning- either proactive or reactive.
To protect crew against exposure to dangerous substances used in fire-fighting systems, as well as to minimise the impact on the environment, the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment ( SSE) has finalised prohibition of perfluoro-octane sulfonic acid ( PFOS) from fire-fighting systems on board ships
