MEPC 81 - developments of significance

The 81st meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) made some progress on issues of significant importance to BIMCO members – including on mid-term measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the legal uncertainty regarding ship recycling and underwater radiated noise. Additionally, the Committee adopted a number of amendments to Conventions, approved a number of circulars and made significant progress on ballast water management issues.

Update on work to develop ETS Allowances Clause for SHIPMAN

The subcommittee tasked with the revision of BIMCO’s suite of third party management contracts continues its work to develop a standard Emission Trading Scheme Allowances (ETSA) Clause for use with the popular ship management agreement SHIPMAN. The aim is to present a draft standalone clause for possible adoption by BIMCO’s Documentary Committee when it meets next in Copenhagen on 11 October.

Industry backs United Nations $5 billion "moon-shot" programme to decarbonise shipping

Responding to the UN Secretary-General’s call for “urgency and ambition” on climate change, the entire global shipping industry is giving “full and unequivocal” backing to a moon-shot proposal submitted by governments, to catalyse the complete decarbonisation of maritime transport by deployment at scale of zero-carbon ships within a decade.
