The executive interview
Jan Rindbo: a long road to recovery for shipping post-Covid-19
In each issue, the Bulletin interviews a shipping executive. In this edition, Jan Rindbo, CEO of Dampskibsselskabet Norden, talks about the effect the pandemic is likely to have on the shipping industry in the future and the urgent challenges – such as crew change – that are currently building up.

ICS: governments hold the keys to crew change
As the Covid-19 outbreak spreads across the world, growing numbers of seafarers are unable to sign on or off as crew change becomes restricted, and for many, impossible. According to Guy Platten, Secretary General of the ICS, it is now up to governments to make crew change possible and keep supply chains open.

United for Wildlife: Covid-19 causes drop in wildlife trafficking
Over the past 50 years, the world has lost some 60% of its wildlife. Now, an unexpected ally has emerged: Covid-19. The worldwide shutdown caused by the pandemic has resulted in a cooling demand for wildlife and a subsequent reduction in the illegal transportation of endangered species by sea and air, says the United for Wildlife Taskforces.

Lay-ups reaching 2009 levels as owners lose faith in swift recovery
The number of ships heading for lay-up is rising, as the Covid-19 crisis continues to depress production, consumer spending, economies and world trade. The rise in enquiries for placing ships in lay-up reflects shipowners’ expectations that the market is unlikely to recover any time soon.

In addition, read the latest market analysis from BIMCO’s Shipping Market Analysts, read why the “Phase One” US-China trade agreement is not working and needs adjustments, why shipowners are urged to rethink strategies as Covid-19 disrupts BWMS plans and much more.

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
