Quarantine of ships arriving at ports around the world has previously been an effective means of avoiding the spread of infectious and contagious diseases. Three weeks at an anchorage before the ship was admitted into port was not unusual. With the improvement of port infrastructure and ever more efficient ships, things had to change, and international work was started. The work resulted in the International Sanitary Regulations, which came into force on 1 October 1952.
