European Union Regulations on Union of Myanmar

Council Common Position 1996/635/CFSP of 28 October 1996 reaffirmed an embargo on arms, munitions and military equipment and the suspension of certain non humanitarian aid or development programmes. In addition it introduced a ban on entry visas for certain named persons. Council Regulation (EC) No 1081/2000 of 22 May 2000 introduced a prohibition on the sale, supply and export to Myanmar of equipment which might be used for internal repression or terrorism and the freezing the funds of certain persons related to important governmental functions in that country. These sanctions were subsequently extended, amended and broadened under numerous Council Regulations. Council Regulation (EC) No 194/2008 of 25 February 2008 provided a new text containing all the relevant provisions, as amended for the sake of clarity. The sanctions included: Ban on certain import goods (Round logs, timber, timber products, coal, certain metals, precious and semi-precious stones - Annex I) Ban on export equipment which might be used for internal repression (Arms, munitions, military equipment, certain vehicles, etc - Annex II) Restrictions on exports of equipment used in industries targeted by the import ban (Annex III) Ban on the provision of certain services (incl. financing and financial assistance related to equipment used in industries targeted by the import ban) Freezing of funds and economic resources (Annex VI), together with the banning of certain investment Lists of targeted persons, entities and bodies were provided under Annexes V, VI and VII.
