Harbour

The port of Richards Bay is constructed in a lagoon, where the innermost quays at the head of the port are situated over 3 miles from the entrance. The general depth in the port is 19 m (62'6'') MLWS and the bottom consists of hard sand. There is a turning circle with a diameter of 800 m. The following
facilities mentioned clockwise from the entrance are in use:

Fendering:
All commercial berths are fitted with rubber fendering. Berths 301 to 304 are fitted with cylindrical fenders with an outside diameter of 2.0 m. Similar fenders with and outside diameter of 1.6 m are fitted to berths 609 to 707.
Bridgestown type SM 800 H x 3.0 L are fitted to berth 209.


General Cargo Berths:
Berth 609 is serviced by rail tracks and has a surface backup areas. It is currently used for general and abnormal heavy/cargo working. The berth can also accommodate ro-ro vessels.


Dependant on availability, berths 701 to 704 can also be used for general cargo working. There is, however, no stacking area directly behind these berths. Rail tracks serve these berths.


Berths 706 and 707:
Development of services and other infrastructure behind these quays is partially completed and being utilised while others will be completed in the near future.


Privately Operated Facilities:
Export of coal is handled through the terminal, owned and operated by the Richards Bay Coal Terminal Company (pty) Ltd.


A terminal for the storage and shipping/receiving of liquid chemical is operated by Messrs. Richards Bay Bulk Storage (pty) Ltd. These chemical are shipped across berth 209.
