This draught restriction may, however, be increased to 10.4m provided the vessel completes and sails on a rising tide. The Master is to sign an indemnity form confirming that his vessel will be ready to sail at the top of the tide and by failure to do so, there will be no recourse to the Port Authorities for any delayed sailing, etc.
The size of a Panamax vessel able to enter the harbour is controlled by the draught and depth of water over the bar, ie 10m plus, on application to the port captain, 0.4m dependent on tide and weather conditions. It is not possible in East London to shift to a conventional berth for topping off.
Vessels in excess of 182m which are to berth at "P" or "R" sheds, and which enter port after dark, will be "head up" the river. This is an important factor to consider when contemplating bringing a vessel into port after dark.
The Combi Terminal (which handles containerised traffic) has a max draught of 10.0m. There is also a dedicated Ro-Ro berth at "K" corner, with a max draught of 10.0m.
Cargo vessels which arrive after 1300 hours on Sat and which have a berth available to them, will not normally be attended to until Sun morning.
Tankers loaded with white oils, ie hazardous cargo, may only berth during daylight hours. Port Authorities will, however allow sailing up to 2200hrs (weather permitting). Tankers carrying black oil will be attended to in the same manner as cargo vessels.
