Two (2) long, curved breakwaters form and protect the harbour, which has eleven (11) numbered piers and wharves with a total berthing length exceeding 3,000 m and depths alongside between 6 m and 10.7 m (20'-35'). An Oil Jetty (Pier 7) with 262 m (860') berthing face and 10.7 m (35') depth on either side. A Naval Yard occupies the NE portion of the harbour. Pier 5 handles bulk minerals and general cargo. Tourist vessels are berthed at 5A. Quay 11 has facilities for handling grain in bulk. Quay 9 has portable conveyors for the loading of fishmeal pellets.
