Late last week, an explosion at South Africa’s second largest refinery cast focus firmly on the East and South African refined products market. Engen’s 120,000 b/d Durban refinery is small by modern standards but combined with the ongoing outage at Astron Energy’s Cape Town plant (100,000 b/d), the nation’s product balances have moved more sharply into deficit. The world’s biggest economies are strengthening their military presence in Southeast Asia, and meanwhile, the security situation in the Red Sea off Yemen remain volatile. On 9 October BIMCO will shed light on the international security situation to raise awareness and stimulate discussions.

At the most recent International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) Funds meeting in London, Ban Ki-moon, former United Nations Secretary-General, spoke to representatives, IMO staff and the Funds’ Secretariat about the value of shipping to international trade, climate change and encouraging and empowering women to play a greater role in shipping.
