IMO approves strengthening port call data exchange

Standardising and harmonising electronic ship to shore communication by integrating administrative, nautical and operational data, will strengthen port calls in general and support maritime digitalisation. This was one of the conclusions from the most recent meeting in the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Facilitation Committee (FAL) held 9-13 May 2022 (FAL 46).

FIT Alliance launches eBL declaration to secure commitment to digitalisation

BIMCO, DCSA, FIATA, ICC, and Swift (The FIT Alliance) have launched the “Declaration of the electronic Bill of Lading” as the adoption of eBLs can help make international trade more efficient, reliable, sustainable, and secure. The aim of the declaration is to secure commitment from all stakeholders in international trade to collaborate on driving digitalisation, starting with eBLs, within their industries.

The BIMCO President Mr Papagiannopoulos highlighted the main opportunities and threats for shipping coming from digitalisation at the 3 rd ShipIT conference in Athens on 27 September 2017. The opportunities and threats include the admin burden on board ships, autonomous ships, blockchain, cyber risk management and not least the human elements of all these issues.
