The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a set of important amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), as well as various codes mandatory under the Convention. The changes will enter into force on 1 January 2020 and can be viewed below.
BIMCO attended a very useful webinar on understanding liquefaction risks associated with the carriage of Group A cargoes in the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code. Members are encouraged to view this webinar for a better understanding of the problems that can occur with Group A cargoes.
Bauxite cargoes are problematic cargoes capable of experiencing severe liquefaction which unknown at that time, was actually dynamic separation, a phenomenon discovered based on the outcome of the work of the Global Bauxite Working Group. These cargoes will experience dynamic separation, if they are not carried in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes ( IMSBC) Code. In an effort to keep seafarer training, certification and watchkeeping aspects in line with developments in the shipping industry, and to address several challenges faced by seafarers, the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed to start a comprehensive review and revision of the STCW Convention and Code. The work is expected to begin at the HTW sub-committee next year.
