The Hebei Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) in China has recently released a case where the local regulator fined a ship that burned high sulphur content fuel.
US have changed its law in relation to discharges from ships incidental to its normal operation. A new law, the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) establishes a new legal framework for the regulation of such discharges from ships in US waters.
Following the incident in the Gulf of Guinea on 24 November involving the Danish frigate Esbern Snare and a suspected pirate vessel, BIMCO calls on all naval forces in the area to further increase the pressure on piracy groups and hopes a continued naval presence will act as a deterrent.
BIMCO is “deeply concerned” that shipowners will be without treatment systems approved for global use.
Amendment 39-18 will be incorporated into the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG), 2018 Edition, and come into force on 1 January 2020.
The move will help to drive efficiency, providing standardised information, reducing the administrative burden for ships and administrations.
