BIMCO has submitted four papers to the Maritime Safety Committee. The papers discuss how autonomous ships should be tried before they are allowed to operate, and that cyber risk management should be part of the ship’s Safety Management System.

IMO starts work to identify Autonomous Ships regulation

The IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) considered the ongoing scoping exercise to identify affected IMO regulations by Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) at its 101st session in which the Maritime Technology & Regulation and Security departments represented BIMCO.

First ever standard contract for autonomous ship operation underway

BIMCO is adapting the currently used SHIPMAN 2009 agreement for use with autonomous ships, but the lack of actual autonomous ships currently in operation will mean ongoing adjustments as the industry forges ahead with its pioneering projects. Publication of the first version is expected in 2021.

BIMCO to highlight autonomous ships and 2020 fuel challenges at IMO

BIMCO and industry partners will contribute to constructive discussions of a number of important topics such as guidelines for autonomous ships and 2020 fuel challenges at the 100th session of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 100) in London on 3 – 7 December 2018.
