Argentina has just passed a resolution to enforce phytosanitary measures against Asian gypsy moth (AGM) for international ships arriving at Argentinian ports.

SENASA, the Argentinian National Agrifood Health and Quality Service, recently decided to exempt certain products from phytosanitary and quality controls. A transition to a system of private inspections of holds loading grain products and by-products is currently being considered.

The current demise of the dry bulk market isn’t one to go away anytime soon. That doesn’t mean that it can’t improve, with all ship classes expected to cover their operating costs by May. Meanwhile, demolition activity isn’t enough, at least thus far, to offset oversupply of tonnage in the dry bulk market.

As we are heading into Q4 our thoughts go back to the strong days during the end of last year. In spite of a recent strong return of Chinese iron ore imports, history is unlikely to repeat itself. Freight rates have been on the slide since mid-Summer and only Capes have resisted consistent erosion.

On 10 February 2016, the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) hit 290. At that point, a bulk carrier regardless of its size, age and fuel-efficient qualities earned a time charter average of USD 2,417-2,776 per day.
