What happened at this week's Maritime Safety & Security Committee meeting

On 5 October, the committee held its first face-to-face meeting since the pandemic to discuss a wide range of practical and political topics impacting shipowners, operators and managers. It was also a hybrid meeting, giving committee members the option of coming to BIMCO House in Copenhagen or joining in online.
Among the takeaways were:
- Digitalisation is a key enabler to more sustainable shipping, and BIMCO will continue to lead the industry efforts to lay the foundation for improvements in efficiency and sustainability through digitalisation.
- BIMCO will take a comprehensive approach to the human element of safety and contribute to the development of guidelines on managing time pressure.
- Safety and environmental implications to the use of alternative fuels will become a focus area for 2023.
- Cyber security is a moving target and the "Guidelines for cyber security on board ships" are recommended put up for review in 2023.
- Further dialogue will be sought with authorities in jurisdictions that are clamping down hard on shipowners who are unwillingly having seafarers and ships abused as ”mules” by drug smugglers
