The only regulation established by the Marpol 73/78 Convention, refers to
ballast water of petroleum ships without segregated ballast tanks.
Ballast water for all other ships is regulated by the Ballast Water
Treatment New Convention signed in OMI on 13th February 2003, and it will
not come into force until there are 30 countries with a total fleet of 35%
od world’s total tonnage signing such convention.
Thees rules are applicable in all Spanish territorial waters (including
Balearic and Canary Islands).
