After crossing the bar it is not advisable to anchor until after rounding Puponga Point, if proceeding to Onehunga; or after rounding Kauri Point (situated about 1.5 miles South-eastward of Puponga Point), if proceeding Southward.


The water depth in the anchorage is about 9.0 m (Big Bay) and the bottom consists of sand and mud which gives a good holding ground. The anchorage gives good shelter.

Prohibited anchoring and fishing area. Within an area extending 2 miles from Destruction Gully front beacon in a 182 deg. direction and having a width of 152.0 m (500 ft) on each side of the transit of Destruction Gully beacons.
