Harbour

The Port of Victoria's harbour consists of three parts; the outer, inner and upper harbours. The outer harbour, containing Ogden Point Docks and the Coast Guard Base, is the only part suitable for deep sea vessels. The inner harbour contains Ship Point Wharf with 154.4 m, 12 m and 67.4 m of berthage, coastal ferry terminals, float plane terminals, and many small craft berths. The upper harbour contains a small shipyard and commercial barge facilities. The depth in the inner and upper harbours is 5.5 m. Many "pocket" cruise ships use the inner harbour for port visits.  Berths: The deep sea docks at Ogden Point, constructed of large cement caissons and protected by the harbour entrance breakwater, consist of four berths on two parallel wharves 76.19 m wide, 243.8 m long, spaced 92 m apart. The dock complex is owned and maintained by Greater Victoria Harbour Authority and is licenced to be operated by: Western Stevedoring, P.O. Box 1442, 189 Dallas Road, Victoria, B.C. V8W 2X2. Tel.: (250) 386-1321, fax.: (250) 386-2734. Ogden Point Docks: Ogden Point Docks, the only deep sea berths in Victoria, are used year round fro the transfer of deep sea fibre optic cable between ships and to/from the Customs bonded cable depot in the warehouse, and by cruise ships during the Alaska cruise season. Other cargoes handled are forest products (woodpulp and packaged lumber), frozen fish, general cargoes, steel products and scrap metals transhipped to/from barges. These docks are also frequently used by ships seeking refuge from storms to re-stow damaged deck cargoes and/or effect repairs, and for vessels detained or in distress for hull, engine and equipment repairs. If ships are not self-sustaining, mobile cranes to 22.7 tonnes are readily available. Larger cranes are available with 24 hours notice of requirement. 'A' Wharf: (outer wharf - two berths, with a warehouse and large paved passenger transportation and parking areas, and paved cargo storage areas). Access to both berths is restricted by security fencing. The outer wharf contains a modern 9,290 square metre class 3 warehouse containing 929 square metres of class 4 warehousing and working aprons of 12.2 m on the South side and 18.3 m on the North side. The warehouse contains a 232 square metre convenience area and gift shop, a separate Customs control and inspection area for cruise ship passengers, and a 2,100 square metre Customs bonded fibre optic cable depot. The remaining 6,029 square metres inside the warehouse is primarily used for cargo assembly and storage. The large paved area adjacent to the warehouse contains a local parking lot and designated areas for cruise ship passenger transportation (buses, taxis, etc). The remainder of the outside paved area is used for cargo assembly and ...
