Since early July, the capesize rates have gone up and up. By mid-August, they had reached a breakeven level to become profitable. BIMCO estimates that a capesize ship on average fleet financing and operational cost levels, turns profitable when rates are above $15,300 per day.

In October, an Asian-based subcommittee involving major players within the ship owning and ship leasing communities will begin work to develop a term sheet for sale and leaseback transactions to meet a rise in demand and to complete the suite of three term sheets available for financiers, shipowners and their advisors.

A new “Shipmanagers’ Letter of Undertaking” (LoU) is now available on the BIMCO website, together with Explanatory Notes. The LoU sets out shipmanagers’ obligations to lenders financing owners’ purchase of a managed vessel.
