VLSFO premium of USD 200/tonne increases scrubber advantage

The spread between very-low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) has widened following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The HSFO price, however, could rise if Russian volumes coming into the market start declining due to sanctions.

Singapore MPA to ban use of open-loop scrubbers

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has decided to prohibit the use of open-loop exhaust gas cleaning systems within its port limits, as of 1 January 2020. MPA chief executive, Andrew Tan, announced the new regulation, which is already part of current legislation, in his opening address at the Singapore Registry of Ships Forum.

PPR 11 makes progress on significant environmental issues

The 11th session of the IMO Sub-committee on Pollution Prevention & Response (PPR 11) from 19 to 23 February 2024 made progress on developing guidelines on in-water cleaning, reducing the risk of plastic pellet losses from freight containers and discharge water from exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) into the aquatic environment. BIMCO submissions played a significant part in the future actions to be undertaken by the sub-committee.
