Thor Maalouf

Thor advises on all aspects of commercial shipping and maritime law, in particular charter parties, bills of lading, shipbuilding contracts, luxury yacht charters, charters for project cargo, and contracts for shipping and freight services, including multi-modal transport and logistics. She also advises in relation to reorganisations of freight services provision, electronic bills of lading, exploration of the sea bed, and oil pollution incidents where the civil liability convention applies. Thor joined the firm as a trainee in August 2007 and qualified into shipping litigation in September 2009. As a member of the Shipping and Transportation Group, her advice helps clients to reach pragmatic and commercial solutions to disputes but she also has in-depth experience of mediation, litigation in the English Courts, and of LMAA and GAFTA arbitration. Thor has a diverse range of clients, including global commodities traders, international mining companies, shipping companies, P&I clubs, investment funds interested in shipping, investment banks with trading arms, shipowners, and luxury yacht brokers and their clients. Working with such diverse clients has given Thor unusually broad experience and expertise within the shipping and logistics industry.

BIMCO adds Hong Kong to new shortened arbitration clause

The addition of Hong Kong as the fourth named arbitration option has prompted BIMCO to overhaul its law and arbitration clause. The new edition was approved for publication at the recent meeting of BIMCO’s Documentary Committee and is available to download from our website.

Jon Elvey

Jon Elvey teaches and lectures all over the world for BIMCO. He is known for making complex legal topics interesting, understandable and enjoyable. Jon spent 37 years with Ince & Co, the leading international London law firm, specializing in maritime disputes in arbitration and litigation. After 15 years in London, Jon moved to Greece to head Inces’ Piraeus office, developing it into a major law practice. Jon has acted for four decades for many of the industry’s biggest shipowners and charterers, advising them on all their commercial issues, with a particular emphasis on cargo, charterparty, shipbuilding and sale and purchase matters. Notably, Jon acted for the successful sellers on the landmark Aktor case which led to a revision of the standard industry contract terms. Jon has written many articles and commentaries on shipping cases. He acted as editor and adviser on the leading textbook on the law of ship sale and purchase. Jon is now a maritime arbitrator and consultant. He is also a qualified mediator and was one of the founders of an Eastern Mediterranean mediation set. In his spare time Jon plays jazz piano. He is old enough to remember watching the England soccer team winning the World Cup, something he does not expect to see again in the near future.
