BIMCO has appointed Niels Rasmussen as its Chief Shipping Analyst who will take up his new role on 3 January 2022.
The global maritime transport industry has submitted a proposal to form the world’s first collaborative shipping R&D programme to help eliminate CO2 emissions from international shipping. The proposal includes core funding from shipping companies across the world of about USD 5 billion over a 10-year period.

Decarbonisation talk appears to be everywhere nowadays - on a government level and in a plethora of industries. Last year saw several international agreements reached during COP26 as well as European Union proposals to include shipping in their emissions trading scheme. Leaders of the Round Table of International Shipping Associations - BIMCO, INTERCARGO, International Chamber of Shipping and INTERTANKO - met virtually last week to debate key issues facing the maritime industry today. At the meeting, the associations affirmed the industry’s commitment to universal recognition for seafarers, the decarbonisation of shipping and addressing the threat to shipping from piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
It’s a task that’s already well under way. BIMCO is working together with many other key stakeholders in the eBill space to help substantially increase the acceptance and use of electronic bills of lading. The open standard bulk shipping bill of lading is due to be published in March
Antonia is a partner in Reed Smith's Transportation Industry Group. Antonia was called to the Bar in 2006 and has since qualified as a solicitor. She deals with a wide range of contractual offshore and shipping matters. Antonia advises clients on offshore wind projects, specifically in respect of charters for support vessels involved in the wind project. Her experience also includes shipping/LNG charter party, shipbuilding and sale and purchase disputes in relation to both High Court and arbitration proceedings. Antonia acts for owners, charterers, managers and brokers as well as P&I and defence clubs. Antonia advises clients in relation to new decarbonisation regulations and clauses to be used in contracts to address decarbonisation. Antonia was seconded to Maersk in Copenhagen and worked in the offshore sector for Maersk Drilling and Maersk Supply Service. During her time at Maersk, Antonia was involved in reviewing drilling and supply contracts, contract negotiations with oil companies and corporate set ups including JV Agreements.
The shipping industry is estimated to be responsible for around 3% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Work towards decarbonisation is underway and the challenge is immense. Finding solutions – from fuels to technology – to facilitate one of the biggest transitions ever faced by the maritime industry must be a priority. There is lots being done and there is still so much more to do. There is no turning back.
BIMCO has joined the Blue Visby Consortium to support research into practical solutions that help reduce the industry’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
