BIMCO representatives from the Maritime Information Department have attended the 5th session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 5), held at the IMO London headquarters from 10 to 14 September 2018.
A Group A cargo is one which possesses a hazard due to moisture that may result in liquefaction or dynamic separation if shipped at a moisture content in excess of its transportable moisture limit.
There are solid bulk cargoes that are commonly transported by bulk carriers and yet many members are not familiar with the dangers that are associated with them. BIMCO provides timely information and advice on cargoes like iron ore fines, bauxite as well as cargoes that are capable of causing oxygen depletion in cargo spaces and adjacent spaces.
Accidents including fatalities continue to occur in the cargo holds and adjacent spaces of ships carrying solid bulk cargoes and this is a timely reminder to members about the dangers of entry into enclosed spaces.
IMO Sub-committee of Carriage of Cargoes and Containers holds its 5th meeting next week and this is to inform members on issues that are of relevance.

BIMCO has received some enquiries relating to two cargoes: wood pulp and pulp wood. Are they different, or the same? And are fixed CO 2 fittings on ships required to carry these cargoes?
