The 10th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention & Response from 24 to 28 April discussed biofouling management, reducing the risk of environmental damage from plastic pellet losses, Black Carbon’s impact on the Arctic and the use of Electronic Bunker Delivery Notes (e-BDN) amongst other topics.
BIMCO has participated in the first meeting (Inception workshop) of the GloFouling partnership project at the IMO headquarters in London, held from 18 to 20 March 2019.
This is the latest in a series of reports supplied by the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) with the intention of keeping BIMCO members appraised of legislative developments in the US affecting international shipping. In response to growing concerns over the impact of hull biofouling on the marine environment, BIMCO and a group of industry partners have set out to create an internationally recognised standard.
Two papers have been submitted to the 11th session of the IMO’s Pollution Prevention and Response Sub-Committee covering operational and safety aspects of in-water cleaning as well as the revised Procedure for independent testing and certification of in-water cleaning companies.
BIMCO’s committee structure will change to reflect the increased importance of the environment while maintaining a thorough debate on safety. The BIMCO Board of Directors agreed to the change at a meeting in December.
