Tanker market report 31 March 2023

Late last week, the Government of Iraq won an international arbitration award upholding Baghdad’s sovereignty over exports from oil produced in the Kurdistan autonomous region. Following the award, Ankara immediately instructed pipeline operator Botas to cease flows on the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline resulting in approximately 400kbd of crude being forced into storage and now mostly shut in. Sophie is Legal Director of Clyde & Co LLP. Sophie advises on a wide range of contentious shipping matters, disputes arising out of charterparties, bills of lading, ship building contracts, and contracts of affreightment. She also has experience advising on general average and salvage following marine incidents. Sophie acts for P&I Clubs, shipowners and charterers, as well as cargo owners. She regularly advises clients in LMAA Arbitrations and High Court proceedings. Her cases are often multi-jurisdictional aspects, which involve working closely with foreign lawyers in matters such as enforcement. Sophie also has experience in advising clients in respect of non-contentious matters, such as ship sale and purchase, ship management and supply time contracts. Prior to joining Clyde & Co, Sophie worked for another leading international law firm in their Shipping and International Trade team.

Geraldine is a solicitor qualified in England and Wales and recently joined ITIC as Senior Claims Executive. She previously worked in private practice at Ince (London and Paris) and MFB Solicitors for 8 years, handling a wide range of shipping and commercial disputes on behalf of owners, charterers, cargo claimants, P&I Clubs, H&M underwriters and other insurers, with a particular focus on casualty work. She regularly acted on behalf of clients in arbitration proceedings and the English Courts, and assisted with resolving disputes via settlement discussions and mediations.

Elli has practised in both common law and civil law jurisdictions, having lived and worked in the UK, Netherlands and Greece. She is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales and an Attorney at Law in Greece. She has experience with High Court disputes and arbitration (LMAA, LCIA and ICC) and works on a wide range of wet and dry shipping matters, including salvage and wreck removal, offshore decommissioning projects, speed and performance claims, charterparty, and ship management agreement disputes. Previously, Elli worked in the legal department of an international company specialising in salvage and decommissioning services.

SYNACOMEX 2023 is a grain voyage charter party. It was originally drafted by the French Union for Grain and Seeds Trade (Syndicat National du Commerce Extérieur des grains et graines oléagineuses – SYNACOMEX) and the French Shipowners’ Association (Armateurs de France), with the assistance of the Maritime Arbitration Chamber of Paris (Chambre Arbitrale Maritime de Paris) and the French Shipbrokers’ Association (Chambre Syndicale des Courtiers d’Affrètement Maritime et de Vente de Navires de France). It has been approved by BIMCO. The latest edition of this contract is SYNACOMEX 2023.
