The structure of the Shipping-KPI
The foundation of the Shipping-KPI system is the Performance Indicators. There is a total of 64 Performance Indicators – each being directly observable or measurable.
In version 3, Performance Indicators are grouped as follows:
Personnel: 22 indicators
- Technical: 23 indicators
- QA: 16 indicators
- Accounts: 3 indicators
These Performance Indicators are used to calculate the 32 KPIs and finally the aggregated average is calculated for each of the 8 SPIs. Most PIs are reported on ship level, but a small number of personnel related PIs are reported on SBU level for the whole fleet.
While Performance Indicators are likely to change for each reporting period, the Meta Data are used to define each ship’s attributes at 18 different reporting points. This covers both ships’ dimensions, but also provides information on the crew composition based on major nationality within each onboard group i.e. ratings, junior and senior officers. In contrast to Performance Indicators, Meta Data are much more static but need to be adjusted according to actual circumstances, whenever this is required.
The performance indicators allow users to get a detailed understanding on the operative performance of each ship. While the meta data allow for comparison against – for example – ships of the same type or within the same trade. Comparison filters are applied in the Benchmark section of the Shipping KPI site as illustrated below:
