Shipping KPIs Monthly News July 2019

Overview

Two options of manual data entry

Last month’s newsletter explained how the principles of herd immunity can be used to explain how a large data pool protects the individual user from the odd man out, while still being able to identify if you are doing better or worse than your peers. This newsletter will explain how manual data entry work:

To put it simple, data can enter the Shipping-KPI database in one of three ways:

  • Manual entry
  • Spreadsheet import
  • API

Entering data manually is cumbersome and slow, however it can be beneficial prior to using spreadsheets, as it creates a blueprint for later use. The illustration below shows how to edit data manually online:

  • Select “My ships” and then the relevant ship
  • This opens for editing of the ship’s particulars under each heading
  • Enter the relevant PIs below each heading as appropriate

The online manual entry of data provides a wizard for entry, and you are now able to export a spreadsheet for future use. Exporting data is quite simple:

  • Select ”My ships”
  • In the blue boxes on the right hand side, select ”Export”
  • Adjust your settings accordingly in the new windows and select “Export”. For dynamic data only “PIs” is required. You can untick “Ship attributes” and “Secondary Data” at your own discretion.

Upon opening the exported file, all the data are stored in either one column or one row depending on your choices. It is however separated with 1 (one) comma, and as such it can easily be extracted (Below guide is for Office 365):

  • Select the menu “Data”
  • Then “Text to columns”
  • In the Wizard, choose “Delimited” and press next
  • In the second step, choose ”Comma” as delimiter and press ”Finish”

You now have all ships with PIs in single columns/rows, depending on your previous choices.

Are you considering automated data transfer without human errors? An API for use with the Shipping-KPI has been developed. All it takes is a little tailoring and you are ready to start transferring data automatically for quality benchmarking against the entire fleet of more than 6400 registered ships. Take a look here.

Disclaimer: The data in is this newsletter is not authentic but generated as an example.
