Prevention of wildlife smuggling by sea

Overview

As one of the Buckingham Palace Declaration Signatories, BIMCO is keen to share the United for Wildlife Taskforce Alerts. These are advisories for issues of high concern related to wildlife trafficking and the transport sector, and are a core output of the Taskforce Information Sharing System.

The formation of the Transport Taskforce was introduced by the Duke of Cambridge where he invited high- level leaders from the transport industry to work together to curb illegal trafficking.

Angus Frew, BIMCO Secretary General and CEO who was present at the formation, stated:

The maritime industry has been a transportation mode for wildlife smuggling for far too long. By raising our members’ awareness as to how these products are illegally moved we hope to reduce the frequency of this crime.

The Transport Taskforce Alerts are an excellent source of information and advice and we are delighted to be able to share these concerns with our worldwide membership.

The Taskforce have identified 4 key areas where the transport sector can help combat the illegal wildlife trade:

  1. Raising awareness of illegal wildlife trade – through adopting a zero-tolerance policy and working with customers, clients, passengers and staff
  2. Information sharing and detection
  3. Practical measures to stop the transportation of illegal wildlife products
  4. New mechanisms tackling illegal wildlife trade.

The UfW Transport Taskforce Alerts are for member use and information only, they should not be shared outside signatory organisations or released publicly.

Further information can be accessed via the following websites:

Examples of the task force alerts are shown below.

Where applicable to the maritime industry, BIMCO will publish the alerts to all members.
