ICC International Maritime Bureau release 2016 annual piracy and armed robbery report
Overview
This annual report records the lowest number of incidents reported since 1998 although within the reported incidents there is a 10 year high in the number of seafarer kidnappings.
From the IMB’s point they state there is still a lot of ground to be covered to achieve the safety and security of our seafarers worldwide as 151 crew were taken hostage and a further 62 kidnapped throughout 2016.
Globally, twice the number of vessels were successfully attacked while at anchor compared to those attacked while underway or at berth.
The attached files comprised of a summary press release and the full report reflect the figures and the breakdown of incidents throughout 2016 by region and by type. BIMCO members are encouraged to consider these piracy trends when conducting pre transit risk assessments and to ensure ship’s crews are fully prepared.
