Riyadh MoU to start concentrated inspection campaign on crew familiarisaton for enclosed space entry

Overview

The Riyadh MoU initiates concentration inspection campaign  on crew familiarisation for enclosed space entry

The Riyadh Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control in the Gulf Region, known as the Riyadh MOU, which covers six Gulf states (Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia) has announced that a 3-month concentrated inspection campaign (CIC) on crew familiarisation for enclosed space entry will be carried out.

The purpose of the CIC is to ensure that ships have effective procedures and measures in place to safeguard seafarers when entering and working in enclosed spaces on board the ship and to check compliance with the applicable requirements of the SOLAS Convention.

Port State Control Officers (PSCOs) will therefore make additional check using the questionnaire to see if crew members have received training with respect to identifying and understanding the hazards relating to enclosed safe entry and are familiar with the use of relevant equipment in this regard.

This CIC will start on 1 September 2017  and ends on 30 November 2017.
