In response to the numerous challenges arising in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, BIMCO launched a webinar series in the autumn of 2020. The series offer insight from industry experts who join the webinars to share their knowledge and debate what lies ahead for commercial shipping markets.
The second season of the series - "The Shipping Markets Checkpoint: Thinking out loud on what's next for shipping" - is now underway. Throughout the season two, guest speakers who are experts in their fields will join Peter Sand, BIMCO's Chief Shipping Analyst.
The webinars are moderated by Rasmus Jørgensen, BIMCO's Head of External Communication, and all seasons will discuss the present and the future for the three main commercial shipping markets; container, dry bulk and tanker.

#3. The shipping markets checkpoint – Making sense of the broad developments in the shipping industry
Guest speaker: Adam Kent
On 11 May at 3pm CET, the third episode of the season will kick off featuring special guest Adam Kent, Managing Director at Maritime Strategies International (MSI). This episode will offer a broader discussion across all major shipping markets with pan sectoral issues and themes in the center of the discussion. The experts will identify core elements that cut across all sectors to help people make sense of current developments in the industry.
The webinar will also touch upon the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and how the increase in industry regulation affects the industry. Lastly, Kent and Sand will discuss shipping market inefficiencies, how this has been beneficial for the industry and whether it will last.
#4. The shipping markets checkpoint – The super-high rates in container shipping
Guest speaker: Jochen Gutschmidt
The final episode of the second season of The Shipping Markets Checkpoint will take place on 10 June at 2 pm CET. In this episode, BIMCO has the honour to present the vice president of Advisory Services, Global Supply Chains at Sea-Intelligence, Jochen Gutschmidt. This webinar will focus on the current extraordinary container shipping market and put it in perspective of what’s been going on since early 2020. Together, they will discuss commercial procurement and operational management and optimisation, as well as emerging trends in these areas. Additionally, they will discuss the market in terms of fundamental supply and demand dynamics and whether the current market is undersupplied in terms of ships.
The webinars will be broadcast live on BIMCO's YouTube channel, and participants will have the chance to engage with the experts, asking the burning questions on their minds during the Q&A sessions.
#1. The shipping markets checkpoint – The strong dry bulk market
The first webinar of season two was held on the 18 March 2021. In the first episode, BIMCO was joined by Simon Ward, director of Ursa Shipbrokers. Ward and Peter Sand discussed their thoughts about the dry bulk market, as well as macroeconomics and purchasing and sale activities. The main elements of these debates concerned the relevance of China and whether the current strong earnings in the dry bulk market would continue. Watch it here.
#2. The shipping markets checkpoint – The global oil market and tanker shipping
The second webinar of the season took place on the 8 April 2021. In the second episode, Vandana Hari, founder of the Vandana Insights, joined Sand for a discussion about the global oil market in the past as well as the outlook ,and how this could be interlinked with the tanker market. Main themes such as the recovery of the oil market, the impact of trade patterns and geopolitics were raised during the webinar. Watch it here.
