BIMCO is cautiously optimistic about the short-term outlook, where profitable freight rates are currently enjoyed. But fundamentally, the dry bulk shipping fleet is growing at a rate that is unsustainable when factoring in the tepid demand growth. BIMCO has estimated that fleet growth will outstrip that of demand in 2019 and 2020, which makes the medium-term outlook for the dry bulk market gloomy. Furthermore, BIMCO believes that the upcoming IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap will not provide the silver lining that is being anticipated by some market observers.
The discussion will take place at the Bloomberg Intelligence: Navigating through IMO 2020 amid slowing growth event in London, UK on the 11th September from 14:00 to 18:00 BST. The event is free is to attend upon registration. More information about the venue can be found here.
