United States Coast Guard grants BWMS type approval

Overview

On 2 December 2016, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) granted type approval to the first ever Ballast Water Management System (BWMS). Even though this is a major step forward, the BWMS in question might not be suitable for all ships and trades.

Owners are recommended to continue to explore all potential possibilities for delaying their ships compliance date:

  • by applying for an USCG extension letter and/or
  • investigate via their classification societies and flag state whether detachment of the International Oil Pollution Prevention (IOPP) certificate from the Harmonised Certification and Survey Scheme (HCSS) is an option.

This will allow more time before actual compliance with the IMO BMW Convention D-2 treatment standard is applicable.
