Is one of the three principle types of soil. It is a fine grained earthy material, usually white or greyish, comprising of 10% soft lumps and 90% soft grains. It is normally moist, yet not wet to the touch. Moisture is up to 25%. Insoluble in water and organic solvents. Used as filler and coating for paper and in the manufacture of refractories, ceramics, cements and fertilisers. Bulk density (kg/m3): 746 to 1,515.

China clay ( kaolin) - ball clay - bentonite - bloating clay - common clay - fuller's earth - hydrated aluminium silicate - pottery clay - refractory clay; depending on their use classified accordingly by their physical properties.
